WATCH: Cop Slams Girl, Drags Her Through Classroom In Latest Viral Police Video

The officer was placed on leave and the FBI has begun an investigation.

The FBI will conduct an investigation into a cell phone video from Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, that shows a cop slamming a female student to the ground and then dragging her across the floor while shocked students look on.

The video went national at a time when police violence continues to be in the spotlight and on the day the FBI chief suggested viral videos could be causing officers to work scared, leading to an increase in crime.

The video in South Carolina shows the officer approaching a girl sitting at her desk in a classroom.

After a brief exchange, he grabs her and pulls her back, causing both her and the desk to hit the floor. The cop drags her and the desk across the classroom, and she eventually is pulled out of the desk.

The Richland County Sheriff’s office did not immediately return a voicemail left by Patch, but multiple media outlets have reported the officer’s name as Ben Fields and said that he has been placed on administrative leave.

Update, 10/28: Richland County Sherriff Leon Lott said at a press conference Wednesday that Fields has been fired following an internal investigation.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the officer was called to the classroom after the student wouldn’t obey a teacher or administrator, WLTX reported.

Still, Lott said the student should have been handled “with minimal force.”

“It’s very disturbing what happened today. It’s something I have to deal with, and that’s what we’re going to be doing,” Lott told WLTX.

“I shake my head and just say ...I ask why, and that’s what I want to know. I want to know why something like that happened,” he said.

Lott confirmed in a statement posted on Facebook that the FBI will serve as the lead agency on an investigation into the incident.

South Carolina Rep. Leon Howard called for Fields to be arrested in a letter to Lott. He wasn’t the only one advocating for the officer to be disciplined.

“The police officer should be fired and the police department should be sued,” Jesse Jackson tweeted about the incident alongside a screenshot of the video.

National activists saw the video as yet another example of a police officer using excessive force on a non-violent offender.

“How long will it take for Officer Fields to say that he ’feared for his life,’ which caused him to assault her? #AssaultAtSpringValleyHigh,” DeRay McKesson, a leader of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, tweeted.

“It’s not enough to get the cops out of schools,” activist Mikki Kendall tweeted. “We also have to change this mindset that kids who disobey should be criminalized.”

The video surfaced on the same day that FBI Director James Comey told a group of police chiefs in Chicago that officers are concerned about ending up in a viral video, which has led to a rise in crime in some cities.

Comey later backtracked on his comments, and White House press secretary Josh Earnst told reporters that there is no evidence that is the case.
