Why Winter Hunting Season is the Best

Mark Smith of Columbia International University shares why he loves the upcoming winter hunting season

As quickly as autumn arrived, it will soon be gone. Another winter is on the horizon, and with that comes more opportunity. Whether you’re taking to the woods to hunt down that 12 point buck you’ve been watching all summer or that massive bear that you’ve been eyeing up, wintertime provides the perfect backdrop for your hunting experience.

Of course, there are various hunting seasons throughout the year that sport warmer weather, but winter tends to be the most sought after. Here are some of the most popular reasons that avid hunters, such as myself, love taking to the woods in the winter months.

Snow Makes Tracking Simple

One of the best attributes of a winter hunt is having the snow to reveal animal tracks. Compare this to trying to track animals in the summer and fall with leaves and branches, and it becomes clear why winter snow is preferred. This holds especially true when it comes to identifying blood from a target that you hit. Plus, the snow makes it super simple to find new tracks compared to old ones.

It’s Easier To Spot Game

Trying to spot deer in the woods throughout the fall months can be difficult. This is because their brown coats tend to blend in with the local foliage of trees and leaves. In the wintertime, the blanket of snow allows for easier spotting of game. Your game stands out against the white backdrop, and it’s super simple to see the game moving across it. Being able to spot your target sooner means all the difference in getting a great shot or not.

No Bugs To Deal With

If you’ve ever taken to the woods in the summer and fall, you know that ticks can be a big problem. These nasty creatures are so small they’re hard to identify until they’ve burrowed themselves into your skin. Plus, there’s always the nagging mosquitoes that can leave you itching all night long. When you hunt in the wintertime, you don’t have to worry about these bloodthirsty creatures attacking your body.

Hunting in the winter months can be an excellent experience for anyone. It holds many advantages over hunting at other times throughout the year. We experience a milder winter in the state of South Carolina compared to some other places that I have lived. I have come to enjoy the brisk winter air high up in a tree stand.
