Miracle Pup Has Bullet Fragments Removed From Head

KK was found abandoned in Smith County and had surgery Tuesday to extract multiple bullet fragments.

FRANKLIN, TN — Veterinarians in Cool Springs removed multiple bullet fragments from the skull of a dog found abandoned in Smith County back in January.

On January 30, Tressa Bush's parents found the dog — which has since been named KK — laying against a tree on their property, clearly malnourished. He managed to survive the night and Bush took him to a vet the next day, who found he had worms, two broken teeth and a constantly running nose. The vet initially thought KK had an abscessed tooth, but an X-ray showed instead that his head was littered with bullet fragments. The doctor found no entry or exit wounds, indicating the dog had been living with the fragments in his head for an extended period of time.

"The big pieces of the bullet can be removed with ease. However, there are may tiny pieces in what's called the nasal turbinates — which were heavily destroyed," Bush wrote on a GoFundMe page to help pay for KK's care and surgery at Cool Springs' BluePearl Veterinary Partners. "While he can live with damaged nasal turbinates, he will likely have a runny nose the rest of his life — but other than that, he should be just fine."

A CT scan also indicated that KK has several skull fractures and a splintered jaw bone, which the vet said was similar to what someone might sustain in a serious car crash, but is likely due to KK being severely beaten in the head.

In a week, Bush has raised more than $6,300 for KK's vet bills and once he is fully recovered she hopes to find KK a forever home.
