Mold, Mildew Outbreak At Franklin School

Crews are hard at work at Franklin's Liberty Elementary cleaning a mold and mildew outbreak before classes begin next month.

FRANKLIN, TN -- The Franklin Special School District is working to clear up a mold and mildew outbreak at Liberty Elementary.

David Snowden, FSSD's director, told WSMV that schools throughout the district scaled back energy use, as usual, during the week of July 4, by raising thermostat and cutting off some air conditioners. When school staff returned after the break, they found "a greenish-type mold," mostly on hard surfaces, like desktops and counters.

The director told the station a contractor is sanitizing the building and that some furniture will have to be thrown away.

All events at Liberty have been cancelled until the work is complete and the building is re-inspected next week. Snowden said every thing will be good to go by the time school starts in August.

Since all of FSSD's schools follow the energy protocol, Snowden said they'll all be inspected.
