Williamson County Cancels School Monday To Review Safety Plan

In the wake of the deadly shooting at a Florida high school, Williamson County Schools will cancel school Monday to review its safety plans.

FRANKLIN, TN -- As the nation reels from another deadly school shooting, Williamson County will review its safety and security plan and is cancelling classes to do it.

The day after 17 people were shot dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Williamson County Director of Schools Mike Looney is calling for a review and update of the district's safety procedures on Monday, Feb. 19. All teachers, administrators and school resource officers will be required to join in the review, necessitating the cancellation of classes.

"School safety is of the utmost importance in Williamson County Schools. According to news reports, there have been 18 school shootings across our country in the last six weeks," the district wrote on Facebook. "While we have comprehensive safety plans in place, Dr. Looney has mandated that all plans be revisited, reviewed and reinforced immediately with all WCS personnel and law enforcement. All WCS faculty and staff as well as the SROs serving our buildings will participate in this review. As a result, school will be cancelled for students on Monday, February 19, 2018. The School Aged Child Care programs will operate at snow day sites. Dr. Looney apologies for the short notice, but he feels such an action is required."
