Baseball Roundup: Grand Oaks Takes Game 1 From The Woodlands
In another rivalry matchup, Lake Creek earned the inside track to the regional final with a 6-3 win over Montgomery.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — Grand Oaks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take down school district foe The Woodlands 6-5, stealing the opener of their Class 6A Region II quarterfinal series Thursday at Humble High School.
Antonio Sabala went 2 for 2 with three runs batted in for Grand Oaks (26-9-1), and Grizzlies teammates Shane Martin and Larry Drake each had two-hit nights with a solo homer apiece.
Dylan Kerbow led the Highlanders (25-10), going 3 for 4 with two doubles, and Conner Doucet hit a solo home run. Sammy York notched two hits.

The teams will return to Humble for Game 2 at 6 p.m. Friday. If necessary, Game 3 will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, also at Humble.

Lake Creek (25-11-1) scored five runs in the first inning, and senior pitcher Ty Sexton struck out nine batters in six innings to lead the Lions to a 6-3 victory in the opener of a 5A Region III quarterfinal series at Sam Houston State.
Sexton, a Texas A&M signee, got all the help he needed in the first inning and gave up single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Jagger Neely pitched the seventh to earn the save and notched a game-high two runs batted in.
Bryce Jones and Sampson Pugh had two hits apiece for Lake Creek, which beat its rival for the third time this season.
Connor Benge led Montgomery (18-13-2) with two hits, including a double.
Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Sam Houston State.
Porter falls to College Station in Game 1
College Station's Cole Broadus pitched a shutout to send Porter to a 2-0 loss in Game 1 of their 5A Region III quarterfinal series Thursday at Navasota High School.
Broadus struck out five.
Porter starter Zane Adams tossed six innings and struck out nine, and he led the Spartans (22-15) with two hits.
Dylan Carnes got on base three times with a hit and two walks to lead College Station (26-9-2).
Game 2 will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Navasota with a third game to follow if necessary.
