Conroe Wants to Expand Community Center

The city of Conroe needs land for a new community center.

CONROE, TX — Anyone have about 4.5 acres you want to sell? The city of Conroe needs to grow its community center.

The city needs more room for programs and is looking for somewhere that can be improved with amenities like paved parking, an indoor gym and a covered basketball court.

A 2014 study of the current location, the Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center, 100 Park Place, found the site severely lacking. Among the problems is a lack of a covered pick up/drop off location and unsafe pedestrian routes.

The city was trying to do something with a 47-acre parcel that was pretty close to the current location, but after review it was determined that the new site would also have problems.

So the city is back at the drawing board, looking for enough space to erect a 35,000 square-foot multi-purpose building that can house a variety of activities including after-school programs, ESL and GED classes and youth summer camps.
