Construction On SH 249 In Harris County To Wrap Up By End Of 2019
The evolution of a formerly four-lane boulevard into a tollway from Houston to Magnolia and beyond is expected to open at the end of 2019.

TOMBALL, TX — Heavy equipment, orange barrels, and piles of dirt have been common sights along segments of State Highway 249 from Tomball to Todd Mission since the end of 2016, but they should all be gone by the end of this year.
The second phase of the stretch of road known as the Tomball Tollway is in the second year of construction, and it's been a more comprehensive project that involves the addition of feeder roads-which wasn't a need for the phase I segment from Spring-Cypress to FM 2920.
Phase II, which costs in excess of $100 million, picks up at FM 2920 and continues north to Spring Creek. Harris County is also building the bridge over Spring Creek into Montgomery County.

In early 2020, Montgomery will unveil their first phase of the tollway, a 3.7-mile segment that picks up in Spring Creek and into Pinehurst.
The first phase of the Montgomery County portion is projected at about $63 million, followed by the second phase through Magnolia and into Todd Mission which will open in 2021.

The tollway has long been on the drawing board for the Texas Department of Transportation, which dubbed the road the Aggie Expressway. The original plan was for another north-south corridor, with this plan connecting Houston to College Station.
However, the current plan will connect motorists a little farther south to Navasota in Grimes County.
