Man Accused Of Dragging DPS Trooper During Traffic Stop

Russell Patrick Richards, 35, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest.

CONROE, TX — A man who hit a DPS trooper during a traffic stop Wednesday night is facing felony charges of aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest.

The incident happened at about 10 p.m. at Interstate 45 southbound at Research Forest Drive when a DPS trooper pulled over a black Infiniti for a traffic violation.

Police said Russell Patrick Richards, 35, allegedly took off as the deputy approached his window. Officials said the deputy was caught on the side of the Infiniti and dragged several feet before he was able to free himself.

The deputy, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to Conroe Regional Hospital and released the next day.

Meanwhile, the incident sparked a manhunt for Richards, who was found several hours later at a nearby motel.

He was taken into custody and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. hs is currently being held without bail.
