The ceremony held at the Harlingen Convention Center is one of nine the Congressman is holding in his district to thank Vietnam Veterans for their honorable service and sacrifices to our nation. These ceremonies are part of the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration program to honor veterans and to highlight the service of the Armed Forces during that war.
More than 150 Vietnam Veterans attended the ceremony and received a lapel pin from Congressman Vela, Mayor Boswell, Commissioners, and others present to ensure that each veteran was properly thanked. The Congressman said it was just a small token for all they’ve sacrificed for this nation even though it was late in coming. “ You came back to a nation that was not necessarily grateful–in many instances scorned– that is the purpose of today’s ceremony. The Department of Defense and the United States Congress decided to put together these ceremonies during the course of a 10 year period for us to honor those of you that served in Vietnam– we all of us up here, thank you for your service!”
