Fiery Crash On East Freeway In Houston Leaves 2 Dead, 4 Injured

A Dodge challenger was going 100 miles per hour when it hit several cars on the freeway early Sunday morning, police told news outlets.

HOUSTON — Two people were killed in a crash involving several cars on the East Freeway in Houston early Sunday morning.

A Dodge challenger car going at least 100 miles per hour stuck 3-4 cars in the westbound lanes of the Interstate 10 East Freeway near Normandy Street in Houston around 2 a.m. while its driver was pursued by a police officer, according to reports from KTRK and KPRC.

One of the cars caught fire, with two people inside killed, KPRC reported.

The identities of the fatal victims hadn't been released by police as of 10:30 a.m., but family members believe they were two sisters, age 26 and 21, whom family could not get in touch with later Sunday morning, according to a tweet from Courtney Fischer, a reporter for KTRK.

Police weren't able to immediately confirm details about the two who died because the car they were in was "so badly torched," Fischer said on Twitter.

The driver of the challenger had been detained, KPRC reported, but charges had not been announced as of later Sunday morning.

Police had the outbound East Freeway closed for several hours following the crash.
