Houston Heights May Not Remain Dry
Houston City Council approved a ballot proposition to lift the restrictions on beer and wine sales in a portion of the Heights.

HOUSTON, TX — The oldest ban on alcohol sales in the area is headed for a vote. For 104 years, 2.98 square-miles of the Heights has prohibited the sale of beer, wine and liquor.
This coming November, residents of the portion of the Heights bordered by Loop 610 on the north, I-10 on the south, North Durham Drive to the west and Oxford Street to the east will go to the ballot box to determine if they want to stay dry or allow the sale of beer and wine for off premise consumption only.

The ballot language would allow the sale of alcohol at grocery and convenience stores, it would have no impact on the sale of beer and wine at restaurants or clubs.
Grocery store H-E-B funded the petition drive and has been pushing to get the ban overturned. If the ban is repealed, area residents could start seeing St. Arnold and Karbach at the 19th Ave. Kroger by the end of the year.
