Houston Non-Profit Gets $1.3 mil Grant for Work Training

A Houston non-profit received a $1.3 million grant to assist returning inmates reenter the workforce.

Houston, TX -- The U.S. Labor Department has awarded a $1.3 million grant to a Houston workforce service provider. SER — Jobs for Progress of the Texas Gulf Coast Inc., 201 Broadway St., will use the money to assist in the implementation of a Training to Work program.

The grant is part of a $64 million federal program designed to to reduce recidivism and promote the reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals. The Training to Work program provides funds to organizations that serve individuals in high-poverty and high-crime areas, according to a department of labor news release.

Training to Work will offer citizens in a work release program a chance to get on a career path that provides them with education and training to get the skills needed to meet needs of local employers. The program will also provide the recently released individuals with reintegration services, such as case management, mentoring, and follow-up services.

The department of labor is also providing grants to organizations across the country that assist inmates with linking to employers before they are released. Funding will also be given to non-profits that help juveniles and young adults reintegrate into society and find employment after incarceration.
