M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston was named the best cancer hospital in the U.S.

HOUSTON, TX — U.S. News and World Report released the annual ranking of best hospitals in the country and M.D. Anderson is once again the best cancer hospital in the U.S.

The hospital is one of, if not, the most widely recognized cancer hospitals in the world. It's the largest cancer hospital in the world, which results in people from all over the world flying into Houston for treatment. The name M.D. Anderson has been synonymous with cancer treatment for 65 years, the hospital was one of the three original comprehensive cancer care centers in the U.S.

In 2014, most recent numbers available, the hospital treated about 130,000 patients — 8,000 of whom — participated in clinical trials exploring novel and alternative treatments. The hospital received the highest number of cancer related grants in the world and invested $735 million in research.

M.D. Anderson has an endowment of about $500 million and employs 20,000 people. It is also one of the anchor hospitals of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world. The Texas Medical Center is home to 54 health related institutions, including 21 hospitals, and has a workforce about the same size, roughly speaking, as the population of Springfield, IL.
