Vehicle Headlight Safety

Shorter daylight hours, cloudy days and inclement weather all require special attention from motorists. The Irving Police Department recommends drivers take special care on the roads when driving at night and during winter weather events. Travelers should keep in mind:

• In Texas, headlights must be turned on no later than 30 minutes after sunset while driving until 30 minutes before sunrise.
• According to Texas law, drivers are not required to use vehicle headlights when the wipers are on.
• Headlights are required if visibility is less than 1,000 feet.
• Motorcyclists are required to use headlights during both day- and nighttime hours to increase visibility to other vehicles.
• Texas Transportation Code requires all motor vehicles to have two working headlights that are white in color and are not obscured in any way, such as a cover or grill.
• All vehicles must have at least two stop lamps/taillights that produce a red or amber light. Taillights must be visible from at least 300 feet behind the vehicle in normal sunlight.
