I worked many years as a staff writer and editor at the San Francisco Chronicle until April of 2009, when I switched to freelancing. I then wrote for the Los Angeles Times and other publications, and I also took on editing assignments for UC Berkeley and the United Nations.
Being an East Bay reporter for Patch brings my career full circle in the East Bay. My first bylines appeared in the East Bay Review of the Performing Arts. I next worked as a reporter and editor at the Daily Californian while studying at UC Berkeley, where I obtained a master's in journalism. I was a reporter at the Contra Costa Independent, Berkeley Gazette and San Francisco Examiner before moving to the Chronicle, where I worked several years in the Berkeley bureau and in the main East Bay bureau in Oakland.

UC Invites Applicants for Community Project Grants
UC Berkeley is offering grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 to fund joint university-community proposals for community service and neighborhood improvement programs in Berkeley. It's called the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund.

Another Armed Robbery of a Cal Student on Campus
A male UC Berkeley student was the victim of an armed robbery about 7:13 a.m. this morning on campus, campus police said. It was at least the fifth robbery or attempted robbery on or around the campus since Thursday.

Police Calls: Man in Mask Arrested for Attempted Robbery at Target
The Albany police log for Oct. 11 includes a man arrested for an attempted robbery in which he wore a mask and approached a Target customer placing bags in her car. Another man was arrested for stealing an ice cream bar.

Two robbers knocked down a male UC Berkeley student and took his cell phone at gunpoint on campus near Moffitt Library on Sunday night, UC Berkeley police said today, Monday. The assailants got away.

Cal Student Assaulted by 3 Robbers on Campus
Three robbers tried to wrest away the backpack from a male UC Berkeley student who was walking on campus at 12:40 a.m. Saturday, UC Berkeley police reported. They fled when the resisting student began yelling.

Several Berkeley Library Branches to Expand Hours
Three branches of the Berkeley Public Library – Claremont, North and South – will begin expanded hours on Dec. 2 for a total of 52 hours a week at each branch. The new West branch also will have expanded hours when it's finished.

Police Calls: Group Caught Drinking Illegally Want Refund, Agitated Turkey
The Albany police logs for Oct. 5-6 include five people seeking a refund after being caught drinking illegally, a cab passenger arrested after punching another passenger in the face, an iPod and cell phone stolen from a car and an agitated turkey.
