Christmas 2019: What's Open, What's Closed In Fairfax City

See how the Christmas holiday will affect government offices, transportation schedules and grocery store hours in Fairfax City.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday, meaning local government and other services will take a break mid week. It's a given that many services are closed on Christmas Day, but others will be closed Christmas Eve and surrounding days as well.

We've rounded up the closings and schedule changes to know around Fairfax City. Schools are closed for an extended winter break, while other services will run on half-day schedules on Christmas Eve.

Fairfax City Government Offices: All city offices and facilities will be closed half a day on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and all day on Wednesday, Dec. 25.

State courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Dec. 24-26.

Fairfax City Schools: Students are on winter break Dec. 23-Jan 3. All offices are closed.

Fairfax Police Department: Administrative offices will be closed half a day on Dec. 24 and all day on Wednesday, Dec. 25. See Fairfax County Adult Detention Center visiting hours.

Post Offices: Closed Dec. 25. No mail will be delivered.

CUE: Normal weekday schedule on Dec. 24, except all CUE services will end at 7 p.m. Closed on Dec. 25.

Metrorail: On Dec. 25, the Metro system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day. There are no scheduled changes for Dec. 24.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25. See bus timetables.

City of Fairfax Regional Library: Library will close at 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Dec. 25.

Trash & Recycling: Regular service will be provided on Dec. 24. No collection on Dec. 25. On Dec. 26, Wednesday and Thursday routes will be collected. If yard waste and debris collection is delayed, please leave items at the curb for collection.

Waste and Recycling Drop-off Centers: Open half a day on Dec. 24 and closed all day on Dec. 25.

Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open Christmas Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.

Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows:

  • Safeway: 5 a.m.-8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
  • Giant: 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
  • ALDI: All stores will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Wegmans, 11620 Monument Dr.: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Closed on Christmas Day.
  • Earth Fare, 11052 Lee Hwy.: 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Closed on Christmas Day.
  • Whole Foods, 4501 Market Commons Dr: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • Trader Joe's, 9464 Main St.: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
