City Of Fairfax: Weather Alert: High Heat Early In The Week; Sherwood Center Serves As Cooling Center

The National Weather Service has forecast high heat index values in the region through Wednesday: increasing heat and humidity will bring temperatures well in excess of 90ºF, with the heat index possibly reaching up to 105ºF.   

Locally heavy rainfall and isolated flooding is possible Wednesday into Thursday. 

The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, will be open as a cooling center from 1 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 6-7. Please remember to implement appropriate health guidelines (social distancing and mask-wearing) as appropriate.

The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 65 percent, the heat index — how hot it feels — is 121°F.

Remember: many public buildings, including libraries and community centers, can serve as cooling centers. Be sure to check the facility website or call the facility to confirm access and hours.
