GMU Offers Outdoor Performances This Spring On Mason Pond Lawn
Families looking for some safe, socially-distanced performances should check out GMU's new outdoor series.
FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Now that the weather is getting warmer, it's time to enjoy some outdoor, socially-distanced concerts. George Mason University has the answer with a series of performances this spring on the Mason Pond Lawn, which sits in the shadow of the Center for the Arts.
Audiences are encouraged to bring food and a blanket to enjoy the shows. They're also asked to wear face coverings for all outdoor performances. Reserve tickets for all shows online.
- Chorale Broadway Showcase 2021 - When You Believe: Sunday, April 11, 4 p.m. The University Chorale performs a series of Broadway classics, including "Seize the Day" from Newsies, "Circle of Life" from Lion King, "When you Believe" from The Prince of Egypt and more. Free.
- The Barclay Brass: Sunday, April 18, 3 p.m. This D.C.-based ensemble will present an "out of this world" concert, featuring classical works along with themes from the Star Wars soundtrack. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children through grade 12.
- Collision of Rhythm: Sunday, April 25, 3 p.m. This dynamic duo consists of a tap-dancing percussionist and a multi-instrumentalist who juggles and performs beatbox. Tickets are $15 for adults and $19 for children.
- School of Theater - Runaways: Friday, April 30, 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 1, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Based on workshops and interviews conducted with young runaways in New York City in the 1970s, this production by the School of Theater’s Musical Theater Ensemble class includes a unique series of songs, monologues, scenes, poems, and dances. Free.
- Tribute to Sonny Rollins: Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Talented tenor saxophonist and Mason Jazz faculty member Sonny Rollins shows why he's heralded as the greatest living jazz improviser. Tickets are $15 for adults and $19 for children.
