The Not-So-Secret Gardens of Georgetown
A special treat for mom! The 89th Annual Georgetown Garden Tour is Saturday, May 13, 2017
As an avid gardener, I am always on the lookout for inspiration and an opportunity to share in the work of other gardeners.
Author and columnist for the Washington Post, Adrian Higgins, published an amazing book a few years back entitled, The Secret Gardens of Georgetown, and it is by far one of my greatest sources of muse during gardening season. The book showcased beautiful “secret” gardens inconspiciously tucked away in Washington DC’s Georgetown. As a frequent visitor to Georgetown, I can personally attest to the fact that it is quite easy to miss these amazing gems. But, thanks to the Georgetown Garden Club, each year, the general public is provided an opportunity to personally experience some of these hidden treasures during their annual Georgetown Garden Tour. The Georgetown Garden Club is an affiliate of the Garden Club of America, which is supported by generous contributions of neighbors, patrons and garden visitors.
The 89th Annual Garden Tour takes place this coming Saturday, May 13, 2017. And, since it happens over Mother’s Day weekend, it is especially nice for those wishing to do something out of the ordinary as a treat for mom on her special day. The tour will open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Included in the ticket price are delectable afternoon refreshments, which will be served at Keith Hall, Christ Church, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to touring the gardens you can also peruse the Garden Boutique for unique gift ideas. If you would like to commemorate your time at the tour, you can also purchase Gardens of Georgetown. Published in 2015, this beautifully photographed book gives an inside look at some of the most exquisite gardens in Georgetown. “Free-spirited, formal, inspired, fanciful, intimate and grand”, the book tells the story that is Georgetown. Beautifully captured by photographer, Jenny Gorman, and scripted by Edith Schafer, the book can be purchased during the tour or online.

There is still time to purchase tickets so be sure to get yours now for a Mother’s Day your mom is not soon to forget. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online or in person at the tour. And, if your mom is no longer here, why not treat a mom whose child perhaps does not live close enough to physically spend time over this special weekend.
Among the many beneficiaries of the proceeds from this annual fundraiser is the Student Conservation Association, a national organization that provides conservation scholarships to students.
