Police Warn of Theft of Outgoing Mail from Fairfax City Mailboxes

Police said the target of the thefts appears to be outgoing mail containing bill payments such as personal checks.

Fairfax City police are warning residents about several recent incidents in which it appears outgoing mail has been stolen from mailboxes before a mailman has the chance to pick it up.

According to a statement by police, they have received several reports from local residents of the apparent theft of mail taken out of their mailboxes.

"It appears as though the suspect [or suspects] are specifically targeting items of outgoing mail such as bills containing personal checks," the statement read.

On their Facebook page, police added that the apparent thefts are concerning because a resident's bank account and bank routing number can be obtained off personal checks. Or, criminals could attempt to alter the checks and then cash them.

Police said detectives are actively investigating the incidents.

In the meantime, police warn residents that they should be "mindful" of when they put outgoing mail out for pickup, as well as keep an eye out for any suspicious persons or activity.

Even better, police suggest residents may want to drop off letters directly at a post office.

Residents who have any information about these incidents or have any questions can call Fairfax City Police Sgt. Natalie Hinesley at 703-385-7924 or e-mail the police department at police.information@fairfaxva.gov.
