Traffic Alert: I-66 West Closed At Beltway Overnight On Tuesday

VDOT work crews will be closing westbound I-66 at the Capital Beltway overnight Tuesday.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Motorists traveling west from Falls Church to Fairfax County and beyond may want to look for alternate routes Tuesday night, as westbound I-66 will be closed for overnight roadwork.

Virginia Department of Transportation work crews will be demobilizing a crane that was used to install bridge beams for new ramps at the I-66 and I-495 interchange. The work is part of the ongoing Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

From at 11 p.m.- 5 p.m., on Tuesday, VDOT will detour traffic using I-495 and Route 50. The following ramps will remain open during the closure: I-495 North to I-66 West; I-66 West to I-495 South; and 495 Express Lanes South.

Here are the basics for Tuesday night:

  • Westbound I-66 travel lanes will be closed at I-495, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Thru-traffic heading west on I-66 will be diverted to I-495 South. Traffic with then exit at Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, staying to the right toward Fairview Park. Motorists will then take the left fork for Fairview Park North. Traffic will then go left at the traffic signal and stay to the right following signs to I-495 North and I-66, then follow signs to I-66 West.
  • During the closure, the I-66 West ramp to I-495 South, and the 495 Express Lanes South will remain open to traffic.
  • VDOT will reopen all lanes to traffic by 5 a.m.
