What's Open, What's Closed In Fairfax City On New Year's Day 2020

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

Fairfax City Government Offices: All city offices and facilities will be closed Jan. 1.

State courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Jan. 1.
Fairfax City Schools: Students are on winter break Dec. 23-Jan 3. All offices are closed.

Fairfax Police Department: Administrative offices will be closed Jan. 1. Fairfax City police officers and dispatchers will be on duty 24/7 on New Year's Day. See Fairfax County Adult Detention Center visiting hours.
Post Offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.
CUE: No service on Jan. 1.
Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.
City of Fairfax Regional Library: Library will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will be closed on Jan. 1.
Trash & Recycling: Wednesday, Jan. 1 and Thursday, Jan. 2 refuse and recycling routes will be collected Jan. 2.
Waste and Recycling Drop-off Centers: Closed Jan. 1.
Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open Christmas Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.
Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows:
- Safeway: Some Safeway locations will be closing early New Year's Day. Call your preferred location to confirm hours.
- Giant: All stores are open New Year's Day, though specific hours may vary by location.
- ALDI: Stores will be open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will be closed Jan. 1.
- Wegmans, 11620 Monument Dr.: Closing at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and opening at 6 a.m. on Jan. 1.
- Earth Fare, 11052 Lee Hwy.: 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Jan. 1.
- Whole Foods, 4501 Market Commons Dr.: 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Jan. 1.
- Trader Joe's, 9464 Main St.: Closing at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed Jan. 1.
