Fairfax Water to Replace Water Tank At George Mason University

Construction on the new tank begins in September and is expected to take almost two years.

FAIRFAX, VA — Fairfax Water is set to begin construction on an all-new, 155 feet high water tank that will improve service to the George Mason University campus and Fairfax businesses and homes.

The project will begin in September and is expected to take a little less than two years. It will stand in the place of the old water tank, located on Patriot Circle on the George Mason campus, near George Mason Boulevard and University Drive, not far from Alan and Sally Merten Hall.

Fairfax Water officials said the new 2.5 million gallon tank is needed because some locations in the service area have lower water pressure than other areas. The new tank serves the campus and areas South of Main Street; its shape will help maintain high water quality in the area, according to information from the Fairfax Water website. Officials said neither campus or city residents should experience discolored water or lower water pressure during construction.

The tank's construction will only take place on the campus; Staff said they are working with the university on project logistics to limit the adverse impacts to parking and transportation at Mason and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Project updates will be posted here on the Fairfax Water website.
