Rescue Me: This Shy Feline Will Warm Your Heart

Mustache is one of 90 cats rescued from a hoarding situation, and he's looking for his forever home.

FAIRFAX STATION, VA — Mustache is about 5 1/2 years old. He is one of 90 cats seized from a hoarding situation. He entered a rural shelter in June of 2019 and sat there for over a year. Because he's so shy, he was looked over time and time again.

Mustache came to Homeward Trails and entered a foster home where he's blossomed. Here is what his foster mom says about him:

"He is very talkative, and his sweet little raspy meow gets us every time we hear it. He still doesn't allow petting, but he loves following us and the cats around and being near us. He comes with me to my pottery studio and watches me work. He'll even sit on our couch, a comfortable distance away, while we watch a show.

He's very food motivated and he definitely knows we are a food source and will rub the back of our legs near food time. He still loves playing with everything that is remotely close to a toy, but he has his favorites, including the robot vacuum (!), a chirping bird, and a feather wand with a bell that he likes to drag from floor to floor; basically, if it makes a noise, he really loves it. He also really loves cats and wants a friendly cat who will play with him!"

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue adopts pets to homes in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland. Anyone interested in our animals can complete an adoption questionnaire. We work with applicants to ensure a good match between them and the pet and vice versa, the adoption questionnaire is how we start the adoption discussion. Most of our animals are in foster homes in the area. Others are available to meet by appointment at our Adoption Center.
