State Sen. George Barker Wins Reelection Tuesday

Virginia senator faced a challenge from Joseph R. Murray.

State Sen. George Barker of Clifton, a Democrat who represents the 39th District in the Virginia Senate, prevailed in Tuesday’s election, winning 53.75 percent of the vote to hold onto his seat.

Barker, who first won election in 2008, represents a district that stretches across Prince William and Fairfax counties as well as a part of the City of Alexandria.

Barker received 19,966 votes or 53.75 percent of the vote; his challenger, Republican Joseph R. Murray, received 17,093 votes or 46.02 percent of the vote.

The race was an expensive one, with Murray raising $338,696 and Barker $224,602, according to VPAP.
