FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Drivers can travel in both directions again on George Street in downtown Fredericksburg after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) removed a temporary one-way traffic pattern in place between Caroline and Sophia streets.

In January, VDOT announced traffic on George Street would remain restricted to one-way westbound traffic for an additional month as utility relocation work continued. The street was reduced to a single lane last November to allow crews to relocate telecommunications utilities ahead of construction work for a VDOT renovation of the Chatham Bridge.

Work was originally estimated to be finished by mid-January, but work crews required several additional weeks to bore through rock and earth to create a new channel to carry utility lines underneath the Rappahannock River, extending the need to retain the one-way westbound traffic on George Street for the staging of crews and equipment.
