An 18th-century farmhouse in Spotsylvania County was demolished this month, much to the dismay of local historians.

Built in the 1780s, Bloomsbury farmhouse off Courthouse Road was listed on the national Register of Historic Places for serving as a field hospital during the Civil War Battle of Harris Farm.

Owner Leonard Atkins told The Free Lance-Star the home was in disrepair due to severe termite damage, saying the structure was “too dangerous to bring back to life.”

Local historian John Cummings told the newspaper he was saddened by the loss of the landmark, which he called an “important cultural resource.”

Atkins donated the home’s furniture to a family who lost their home to a fire, The Free Lance-Star reports.
