Fredericksburg Christmas Parade Changing But Not Canceled

The coronavirus pandemic hasn't stopped the annual holiday parade, which is scheduled for Dec. 5, from moving forward.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA—The coronavirus pandemic has yet to stop the annual Fredericksburg Christmas parade from moving forward.

City officials recently announced they are in the planning stage. Registration is currently underway for anyone interested in taking part in the parade.

While plans are moving forward with the popular holiday parade, city leaders said they are aware that with the uncertainly of COVID-19, events can drastically change or be canceled all together by the city or state.

"We are working closely with all city departments to format the parade in such a way that health and safety for our participants and the community are top priority," city officials said.

To ensure everyone's safety, the city has redesigned the traditional parade to a "reverse parade" format. Floats will be stationed along Gordon W. Shelton Boulevard and attendees will drive by. It will be similar to a free drive-thru light display.

This reverse parade format will allow for spacing between parade entries and no direct contact with the public, city officials said.

According to city officials, the theme for this year's parade is “Light Up The Season!”
