FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) will reopen to the public Sunday with new exhibits after temporarily closing Jan. 1 to prepare the museum for its 2020 season. From March 1 to April 30, the FAM will be housing an exhibit called "Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America."

The "Hometown Teams" exhibit is a Smithsonian traveling exhibition that examines the many roles that sports play in American society. This exhibit is sponsored by Germanna Community College and the Fredericksburg Nationals.

Sara Poore, president and CEO of the Fredericksburg Museum Council, told the Free Lance-Star that getting the Hometown Teams exhibit, which is part of Museum on Main Street — a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Virginia Foundation of the Humanities — was important for FAM.

Another new exhibit opening Sunday is "The People's Gallery," which will showcase the collections of Fredericksburg residents, from Matchbox cars to sports memorabilia. The exhibit will be located on the second floor of the museum.

With the Fredericksburg Nationals scheduled to play their first home game in late April, the FAM is preparing an exhibit called "the Baseball Change-Up!" The exhibit will look at ways baseball plays a major part in the lives of people in the community. The exhibit, sponsored by Germanna Community College and the Fredericksburg Nationals, will be opening sometine in April. An exact date has not been set.

The Fredericksburg Area Museum, at 907 Princess Anne St., has a $3-$5 entrance fee and is free for children 5 and under. Admission is free on Mondays. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Wednesdays when it is closed.
