Honda CR-V Models Voluntarily Recalled for Fire Risk

American Honda Motor Co. announced Oct. 6 that model-year 2002 - 2006 Honda CR-Vs are being voluntarily recalled due to an issue with the power window master switch. The company said there are about 268,000 cars in the recall.

"Under severe conditions, rain water or other spilled liquids may enter through an open driver’s window and enter the master power window switch on the driver’s door," said the car manufacturer in a press release.

"Over time, exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness," said Honda. "Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire, creating a risk to motor vehicle safety."

Honda said four switch fires have been reported, but no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.

Honda's recall encourages owners to take affected vehicles to an authorized dealer.  According to Honda, mailed notification will be sent to owners in early November. But CR-V owners can determine if their vehicle needs repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com or calling 800-999-1009, and selecting option 4.
