Malcolm Jamaal Roach, 25

Obituary and service information from A. L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home.

Malcolm Jamaal Roach, 25, passed away suddenly at home in Stafford, Virginia, on Monday, February 15, 2016.

Malcolm was born March 12, 1990, in El Paso, Texas, to Brenda Hartsfield and Samuel James Roach. He graduated from Mountain View High School in 2008. Malcolm participated in several organized school athletics, and was a standout football player at both Colonial Forge and Mountain View High Schools. He was a prankster and a much-loved member of the high school community.

His high school friends have numerous stories of pranks that Malcolm was involved in, as well as stories where he was the leader of just as many. He enjoyed fun and laughter; that’s why he tried to “one up” anyone and be the best at everything he did.

Malcolm also attended Liberty University and Northern Virginia Community College.

Malcolm loved fishing, his new Harley, and most of all, his nieces and nephews. He was a kid playing with kids when he was around them. He served at Mt. Olive Baptist Church for tree removal as well as setup and tear-down of major outdoor events. His ministry was definitely working with his hands.

Dear friends will also remember Malcolm’s selflessness when seeing others in need. He is credited for coming to the rescue of a friend after an ATV accident. He was 14 years old, but he had the presence of mind to remove his shirt and wrap it around his friend’s leg in an effort to stop the bleeding. He then went to a more populated location to direct the ambulance to the location of the accident. He was recognized as a hero on the nationally-broadcast show “Whaddyado.” Family and friends all around the world were able to see the special, kind-hearted person Malcolm was to grow up to be.

Malcolm was a member of the Hartwood Bikers Club, which he joined after purchasing his new toy...his Harley.

Malcolm is survived by his loving parents Samuel and Brenda Roach; his paternal grandfather George Stokley (Thelma); his brothers Kelcey Hartsfield and Samuel James Roach II (Monique); his nieces and nephews Alivia, Samuel III, Jazmine, Jordan, Jaylin and Kallie Roach, Zyon, Zayden, and Zoey Hartsfield; his god-sister Ania Alexander; his special friend Ashley Rivenbark; and a host of uncles, aunts, great-uncles and aunts, and cousins. Malcolm was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Geraldine Hartsfield and his paternal grandmother, Barbara Powell.

Viewing will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 395 Mt. Olive Road, Stafford, Virginia on Monday, February 22. Malcolm will be laid to rest at the church cemetery immediately following the service. A repast will be held at the church dining facility after the burial. Family and friends are welcome.
