New Historical Markers In Fredericksburg For Black History Month

Two new wayside panels have been added to Fredericksburg historical markers to celebrate Black History Month.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Two new wayside panels have been added to historical markers in Fredericksburg. The new panels were installed just in time for Black History Month, as the new additions focus on the historical impact of Black people in Fredericksburg, according to a video posted to Fredericksburg government's Youtube page.

The freshly installed panels provide detailed information about different Black people who influenced the Fredericksburg community. "The Green Book" panel and the "Freedom Riders Challenge a Nation" panel are located on Princess Anne Street, near the fire station and the post office. A third panel honoring John DeBaptiste, will be installed soon on a riverfront site, according to the video.

"This past August, the city council allocated funding and staff resources to advance our community's efforts in better representing Fredericksburg's full history and to share a more inclusive lens to our story,"said Vice Mayor Charlie Frye. "These three new panels will help tell a more complete story of African American influence and experience in Fredericksburg's history."

"I encourage you to share in our notable Black stories. Take a self-guided tour through downtown's African-American history, support our locally owned Black businesses."

The three new wayside panels can be read in their entirety on the Fredericksburg government's website. Each panel includes several photographs and written historical information on pioneering Black people throughout Fredericksburg's history.
