No Make-Up for City School Snow Days...Yet

A decision to shuffle city school calendars to make up for time lost to weather has been nixed until at least March.

A proposal to make up for lost school time due to recent snow days has been postponed for at least a month. Fredericksburg schools Superintendent David Melton had proposed converting three upcoming early dismissal days into full school days to help reinforce the school calendar against potentially falling under state requirements to hold 990 hours of instructional time.

Melton's recommendation was to extend early dismissal days on Feb. 18, March 18, and May 13 into full instructional days. Members of the School Board adopted a wait and see approach for the time being, opting to bet against any further inclement weather adjustments until their next meeting.

Fredericksburg's school calendar does not include built-in snow days, instead, the school calendar has built in instructional hours which take it beyond the 990 hour minimum requirement by a number of days. This allows the school board some flexibility in responding to weather induced schedule adjustments.
