Spotsylvania Man Arrested For Shooting Girlfriend During Argument

Clayton Cross reportedly shot his girlfriend, wounding her, during an argument in his Spotsylvania home Sunday evening.

A Spotsylvania man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute Sunday evening.

The County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a 911 call around 8:40 p.m. Sunday from a woman who said she had been shot. Upon arrival, the female victim said her boyfriend, Clayton Cross, had shot her in the arm after they argued in his home, where she had been staying for a few days.

The woman said that after she was shot, she ran to a neighbor's home and called 911.

The victim was treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and then taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where she was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. She has since been released.

Deputies arrested 52-year-old Clayton Cross of Spotsylvania without incident. Detectives searched his home, taking a handgun and other forensic evidence.

Cross has been charged with malicious wounding, shooting in an occupied dwelling and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A judge has ordered him to be held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
