Stafford Father, Son Died in Spotsylvania Plane Crash

Virginia State Police said the plane struck a tree.

a plane crash in Spotsylvania County near Shannon Airport on Saturday. 

Virginia State Police said that John B. Morton Jr., 48, had been working on the Cessna 150M single-engine plane and conducting take-offs and landings from Shannon Airport on Saturday. 

"During one of these exercise, the plane suddenly fell from the sky and crash landed, striking a tree off of Carrie Court," VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller said in a press release. "There was no fire or hazmat situation associated with the crash. No structures or residences on the ground were struck; nor was anyone on the ground injured."

Geller said Morton and his 13-year-old son Kyle Morton both died at the scene of the crash. 

"Their remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination," said Geller.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration both arrived on the scene Saturday night to conduct their own investigations into the incident, said Geller.

The state police investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, Geller said. VSP secured the scene overnight and investigators will return Sunday morning to continue an investigation.
