NEW YORK CITY — What a lousy Mother's Day weekend gift.
Rain — and lots of it — is expected to drench New York City from Friday until Mother's Day morning, according to the National Weather Service's forecast.
And the rain could have longer-lasting effects into next week.

AccuWeather warned that the rainstorm system could not only usher in a wave of summery heat next week, but also linger over the Atlantic, fester into a tropical-like storm system and whip back to batter the coast from New York to Florida.
"There is a low chance of subtropical development along or just off the southern Atlantic coast later next week," said Joe Lundberg, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, in the service's report.

But those low, yet potent, chances of future heat and tropical storms next week aren't what New Yorkers will for certain be complaining about this Mother's Day weekend.
Instead, expect two solid days of wet weather.
Friday alone could get a half-inch of rain during the day, and up to 1 inch at night, the National Weather Service forecast states.
It won't be much, if any, better on Saturday, which is predicted to have high temperatures fall to 48 degrees and wind gusts up to 33 mph, according to the forecast.
"Chance of precipitation is 90%," the forecast states. "New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible."
Things will start to clear up on Sunday — Mother's Day — but it still carries a 30 percent chance of rain, the forecast states.
