UMW Baseball Opens Season with Sweep

Squad victorious in doubleheader opening contest.

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for seven runs in the first game, and freshman Jake Black threw five no-hit innings in the nightcap to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Messiah College in both teams' season opener on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium.

In the opener, the Eagles scored twice in the first inning and held a 5-0 lead through four in a 7-3 win. In the nightcap, Southerland added another pair of hits to pace the offense and freshman Jake Black allowed no hits in five innings in picking up the win. Black struck out four and walked four. Junior Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) picked up the save, striking out two in the seventh inning.

The Eagles will host Christopher Newport University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
