UMW Men's Lax Beat Virginia Wesleyan 8-7

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell behind early but stormed back for a win over Virginia Wesleyan College.

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team edged Virginia Wesleyan College 8-7, on Saturday in both teams' season opener at the Battleground. Seniors Mark Bowler and Kohl Meyer each scored twice to lead the Eagles.

UMW fell behind 3-1 at one point in the first half, before scoring five straight goals. Freshman Chip Pittard started the comeback. Bowler's second score tied the game at three, Meyer scored twice and freshman middie Josh Furnary added another to give UMW a 6-3 advantage in the third quarter.UMW never looked back, but the game was a close contest. The Marlins cut the deficit down to a one goal advantage twice in the fourth quarter, scoring in the final minutes to make the score 8-7. 

UMW outshot the Marlins, 33-30, and had 41 ground balls to 25 for the guests. Senior goalie Ryan Kleman earned the win with 15 saves, while Tyler Keech had 10 stops for VWC.

The Eagles host Hampden-Sydney College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
