UMW Women's Lax Over Guilford in Opener

All-American Cam Kennedy leads squad with five goals in road win.

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team opened their season with a 17-8 road win over Guilford College. 

Junior All-American Catherine Kennedy scored five goals and sophomore Keller Torrey added a career-high six assists. Senior Katie Wallis scored three goals and junior Allie Kimmelman added a goal and three assists for UMW.

UMW opened the game with a 9-1 scoring streak, tallying seven straight goals, three from Wallace. At the half, UMW led 9-3.

The second half saw Kennedy and junior Lauren Callison both contribute two goals for an opening four goal run. Later, Kennedy tallied her fifth goal, followed by Senior Erin Murphy to bring the score to 15-4. The game was capped off with goals from Claire Gianelle and Addie Hawley for a final score of 17-8. 

The Eagles outshot Guilford, 33-23, and had 24 ground balls. Junior Danielle Guigli  had two saves and sophomore Kathryn Stiltz added four for UMW, while Liza Mettler had nine saves for Guilford. Jenny Atmar forced five turnovers and snagged four ground balls for the Eagles. 

Mary Washington play again next Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Hood College.
