Virginia Artists Advocate in General Assembly

Virginia artists create change.

Fredericksburg, VA- Much like the materials and subjects they delve into to create art, Virginia artists play a significant role in moving politics and social change forward in their communities.

Join artists and our community in continued support of the upcoming Senate and House Bills SB1640 and HB 2025.

SB1640 introduced by Sen. Boysko and HB2025 introduced by Delegate Tran will be heard tomorrow in committee.

Driving Privilege Cards would authorize folks to drive who haven’t been eligible to access Virginia Drivers’ Licenses due to their immigration status.

These bills follow the recommendations of a stakeholder study that brought together more than 40 parties over 11 months to study how this has been implemented in other states and the impact on Virginia.

"Your representatives need to hear from you!" says CASA's Immigrant Justice Advocate and Itinerant Pastor Lana H. de Martinez as she explains this process,

"First, we have to contact all of the committee members before Wednesday morning.

Then, we invite you, the public to show up and testify in support of the bill.

If the bill makes it out of committee it will go to the full chamber (Senate or House) for a vote. If both bills make it through they will be incorporated into one bill for the governor to sign. If only one bill makes it through, it will cross over to the other chamber to go through the same process."

DLP cards have been a topic of discussion during sessions for over five years, as Virginians eagerly await the chance to be able to drive safely, under the law and without fear as they go about their daily lives, driving their children to school, soccer practice or the doctor's office, all Virginians benefit from equity and safe roads for all.
