Wintry Mix Expected Midweek In NoVA, DC For Messy Commute

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Weather Service is tracking a storm that could bring a messy mix of snow and rain to the Washington, D.C., region on Wednesday, and will dump 6 to 12 inches of snow in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and other states to the north.

Meanwhile the higher elevations of western Virginia will get a couple inches of snow Sunday night into Monday morning.

"Winter weather headlines are in effect beginning late tonight for the Appalachians and Shenandoah National Park and for north central and western Maryland, western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia starting Monday," the National Weather Service said Sunday afternoon.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday with 4 to 8 inches expected, with locally higher amounts around 10 inches above 3,000 feet for western Highland County.

Northern Virginia Blue Ridge is under a winter storm warning from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m Monday with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected at higher elevation. The heaviest snow is expected late Monday morning. Snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour are possible.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday for all or parts of Washington, Allegany, Frederick and Hampshire counties. Total snow accumulations ranging from 1 to 2 inches are predicted in the valleys with 2 to 4 inches in the ridges above 1,000 feet.

And a winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for parts of Highland County and the central Virginia Blue Ridge. Snow of 1 to 3 inches is expected for elevations above 3,000 feet.

Sunday Night: Rain likely, mainly after 5 a.m. Increasing clouds, with a low around 40. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday: Rain, mainly before 4 p.m. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 42. Northeast wind 7 to 11 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 30. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 41. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph.

Wednesday: Snow likely before 1pm, then rain and snow. High near 36. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Wednesday Night: Snow. Low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 37.
