Alexandria Woman Stole, Crashed Car In MD: Police

Police have identified the Alexandria woman who stole and crashed a car in Montgomery County, Md., on March 6.

NORTH POTOMAC, MD — A 19-year-old woman from the Alexandria area was arrested after stealing a car in North Potomac last week and then leading officers on a chase before crashing off of Clara Barton Parkway, police said.

Awa Rahman — of Central Park Circle in the Hybla Valley area — was charged with armed carjacking and making a false statement to a peace officer, according to authorities.

Montgomery County, Md., Police said a man was carjacked at the intersection of Amberlea Farm Drive and Dufief Mill Road shortly after midnighton Wednesday, March 6. The victim told authorities that he was on his way to work when he saw another car stopped at the intersection. Rahman proceeded to wave down his Subaru Outback and ask for a ride.

Once inside his car, Rahman demanded that she be taken to Washington, D.C. Police said she then held what the victim believed to be a gun to his head and ordered him to get out of the car.

At about 12:15 a.m., an on-duty officer spotted the stolen Subaru traveling east on Darnestown Road and Muddy Branch Road and tried to stop the vehicle using lights and sirens, police said. Rahman did not comply and led police on a chase before crashing into trees on the Clara Barton Parkway around Lock 7.

Police said the suspected carjacker was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and then taken to the Central Processing Unit, where she was charged.
