Christmas At Mount Vernon: 5 Things To Look Forward To
Among other Christmas festivities, visitors to Mount Vernon can welcome back Aladdin the camel.

MOUNT VERNON, VA—Christmas at Mount Vernon has returned to George Washington's Mount Vernon, arguably one of the best times of year to visit the estate. Special holiday activities will run Nov. 24-Jan. 6.
From candlelight tours to visiting Aladdin the Christmas camel, there's going on to get you in the holiday spirit.
So if you need a break from holiday shopping or are looking for something to do with the family during Christmas, here are some things to do at Mount Vernon.

1. Mount Vernon by Candlelight
The first tours are already sold out, so that should be telling about how good this tour is. Visitors will explore the estate by candlelight and learn about 18th century holiday traditions. Tours for Nov. 24 and 25 are sold out. Tickets are available for Dec. 1 - 2, Dec. 8 - 9 and Dec. 17. The cost is $24 for adults and $16 youth for kids ages six-11.

2. Aladdin the Christmas Camel
Bringing a camel to the estate for Christmas has been a tradition since George Washington did so in 1787. Today it's one of the more popular holiday activities at Mount Vernon. Every year Aladdin the camel makes the trek from Berryville, Va. Visitors can chat with a costumed re-enactor to learn more about the fascinating animals at George Washington's home during the holiday season. And Aladdin is more than happy to take selfies!
3. Fireworks
Visitors get a special treat the weekend of Dec. 15-16. Mount Vernon will host fireworks over the Potomac River accompanied by holiday music. There will also be local choir performances, re-enactors, and a visit from George and Martha Washington. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with fireworks starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $34 for adults and $24 for kids with a mansion tour and $30/$20 without.
4. Special Holiday Dinner Tour
Learn about the foods served up during the 18th century at this limited-time tour. The tour will take an in-depth look at the mansion's basement and the Washington's penchant for hosting holiday gatherings. The tours will be offered Dec. 26-31 at noon. Tickets are $7 in addition to general admission.
5. Chocolate-making Demonstration
It's not a visit to Mount Vernon without a chance to indulge in some chocolate! Costumed re-enactors will lead you through the process of 18th century chocolate making, from cacao seed to chocolate mills. Visitors will also learn how hot chocolate and chocolate tea were prepared at the Mount Vernon estate. Tours are daily in the Vaughan Lobby from noon-4 p.m.
