Hurricane Prompts Alexandria 9/11 Heroes Run To Be Postponed

Organizers will work to reschedule the Fort Hunt race, which honors the heroes of 9/11.

FORT HUNT, VA—As the DC area prepares for potentially dangerous conditions from Hurricane Florence beginning late this week, a race honoring 9/11 heroes will be postponed in Fort Hunt. Organizers of the Alexandria 9/11 Heroes Run announced the Sunday, Sept. 16 race at Carl Sandburg Middle School is cancelled.

There will be efforts to reschedule, but no information is available at this time. Details for a potential new date will be shared on the race's website. The Annapolis race is also postponed.

"We are postponing this year’s 9/11 Heroes Run in Annapolis and Alexandria to avoid putting participants and volunteers in danger, and to allow for all relief efforts to be focused on the anticipated recovery needs of these communities," said Travis Manion Foundation President Ryan Manion in a statement to WTOP. "We urge all those in the hurricane’s path to take necessary precautions in advance of the storm, and we hope for the safety of all first responders who will put themselves in harm’s way."

Named after a soldier killed while protecting his fellow servicemembers in 2007, the Travis Manion Foundation serves military members and their families though efforts like the 9/11 Heroes Run. Every year, 9/11 Heroes Runs are held across the U.S. and the world on or around Sept. 11. The race honors all who made sacrifices in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the wars following. Those honored range from military to first responders and civilians.

Events are organized by local volunteers and allow the community to gather and thank local first responders. This especially hits close to home for Northern Virginia, as first responders from local jurisdictions responded to the attack on the Pentagon.
