Letter: Libby Garvey Questions Krupicka on Gay Rights

Senate candidate for state's 30th District seeks to ensure that the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender community receives the same rights and privileges afforded to straight citizens under the law.

The underlying issue regarding is ensuring that the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender community receives the same rights and privileges afforded to straight citizens under the law.

I know several gay individuals who have their kids in public schools, only in their cases they are the sole guardians of their children. Their partners do not have the same rights as other parents with children in public school: all because gay marriage is still not legal and because gays cannot adopt children in Virginia.

It is truly tragic that loving families cannot adopt children into a loving home and, in Richmond, I plan to make changing that fact one of my top priorities.

However, people around the district, from all kinds of families, have told me Mr. Krupicka’s words struck them the same way they struck me. And the question here remains: why does Rob Krupicka think being the only candidate with children in public schools is an important distinction among us three candidates?

It's important enough to him that he printed his statement on all of his walk literature, his mail pieces, and even lists it first on his website's issues page. It’s a relevant question.

I've dedicated my career to making our public schools in Arlington one of the best ranked public school systems in the nation. My late husband, Kennan, and I put our two daughters through public schools.

I want to know why this is an important distinction to Mr. Krupicka. I know Rob Krupicka is better than this, and we all deserve better than coded language that, perhaps inadvertently, divides our community.

Libby Garvey is a candidate for the 30th District, Virginia Senate.
