Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration In Alexandria

The 47th annual event features a keynote speaker from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria is hosting their 47th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial program this month in honor of the civil rights icon's birthday.

The program, entitled "Dr. King’s 2020 Vision: The Beloved Community — The Fierce Urgency of Now," will start at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, at 3850 Seminary Rd.

It will include remarks by Mayor Justin Wilson, music by the Male Chorus of Alexandria's Russel Temple CME Church and a keynote address by Spencer Crew, the interim director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The event, free an open to the public, is also sponsored by Alexandria’s Community Remembrance Project, which highlights work with the Equal Justice Initiative to examines the city's dark history with lynching.
