Memorial Day 2018: What's Open, Closed In Greater Alexandria

Plus see events going on for Memorial Day weekend if you're staying around town.

FORT HUNT, VA—Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and many families will be starting off the season by vacationing. But if you're in town, many services normally open on Mondays will be closed for the holiday.

Fairfax County offices will be closed Monday, May 28. However, services like the recreation centers, Metro and parks will be open, although on a different schedule. If you're looking for things to do, there's plenty going on around the local area.

Here are the openings/closings and local events to know for Memorial Day:

Fairfax County Offices: Closed Memorial Day.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed Memorial Day.

State Offices: Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Fairfax County will be closed on Memorial Day, including Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Fairfax County Animal Shelter: Closed Mondays.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/ for more information. Fastran will not operate on Memorial Day.

Libraries: Closed Memorial Day.

Metrorail: The system will open at 8 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities. There will be scheduled service adjustments on the Red, Orange, Silver, Blue and Yellow lines.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. See bus timetables.

Parking: Parking is free at park and ride locations and Metro parking lots.

Parks: Colvin Run Mill and Sully Historic Site are open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. E.C. Lawrence, Hidden Oaks, Hidden Pond and Huntley Meadows are open noon-5 p.m. Riverbend Park is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Frying Pan Farm Park farmis open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the visitor center is closed and indoor arena is open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Green Spring Gardens Horticultural Center is open noon-4:30 p.m. For more information, visit fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/holiday-hours.

Fairfax County Recreation Centers: Rec centers open at regular time and close at 6 p.m. George Washington RECenter is the only rec center closed.

Recycling: I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open on Memorial Day.

Trash Pickup: Contact individual Fairfax County and private service providers for holiday hours.
