Principal Chosen For New Alexandria Pre-K Center

The veteran administrator has spent her career working with children with disabilities.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) announced Monday that a principal has been chosen to run a new pre-kindergarten center to open this fall at John Adams Elementary School.

Heidi Haggerty Wagner, an elementary school principal with D.C. Public Schools, will take over her new role on April 2. For the past five years, Wagner has served as principal of J.O. Wilson Elementary School, "a diverse Title 1 urban school with a large preschool program," the Alexandria school system said in a statement.

She will oversee the new pre-K facility at John Adams Elementary, a West End school where classroom space is being created for 360 students. The Pre-K Center will include students from ACPS Virginia Preschool Initiative, the Campagna Center Head Start program, ACPS Early Childhood Special Education and ACPS Preschoolers Learning Together.

"Haggerty Wagner has extensive experience in specialized instruction and has spent most of her career working with students with disabilities," the ACPS said.

She served as the principal of Prospect Learning Center, a D.C. school for students with learning and emotional disabilities. Before that, Haggerty Wagner was a special education coordinator and teacher with Arlington Public Schools.

"I am delighted to be part of the ACPS pre-K team," she said in the statement. "I believe that every child is capable of learning and achieving when given the proper tools to meet individual needs and utilize strengths."

Haggerty Wagner has a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Phoenix and a master’s in special education, learning disabilities from George Mason University.
