Visiting Russian Women's Choir to Perform at West Potomac High School Tuesday

Vito in Canto will perform works by contemporary composers.

West Potomac High School's Choral Department is hosting a Russian women's choir during their visit to the United States. The choir, Vito in Canto, will perform a free concert to the public on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in West Potomac's Springbank Auditorium, 6500 Quander Rd., Alexandria.

The 27 members choir, ages 20-23, along with their conductor Yuly Kopkin, assistant conductor Olga Malakhova, and accompanist Stanislav Sitnikov are in the United States as part of a cultural exchange between Radford University and the Ural State University of Economics,Yekaterinburg Russia.  Choral exchanges between the two universities started in 1999.  Russian choirs and their conductors have performed on the Radford campus in 1999, 2003, and 2009 and in return Radford University choirs have performed in Russia in 2000, 2005, and 2012.  Vito in Canto choirs have also won several awards at international festivals and competitions.

Vito in Canto's concert at West Potomac include sacred works by U.S. and European composers, world music, works by contemporary composers, African-American spirituals and Gospel songs, as well as popular songs.
